Self-Check Hearing Test
Check Your Hearing
Answering the questions may help understand if you have a hearing loss
Do you have a hearing loss? It can be hard to be really sure. Because of the manner in which hearing loss normally occurs, it is often the case that the last person to know about it is the person who suffers with it. The following questions form a hearing self test. Simply answer yes or no to each question.
NB. This test is provided only as a guide and is in not intended to replace a hearing assessment using the correct audiological equipment.

Yes or No
- Do you hear better with one ear than with the other?
- Do any of your relatives (by birth) have hearing loss?
- Have you had any significant noise exposure at work, recreation, or in military service?
- Do you find it difficult to follow a conversation in a noisy restaurant or a crowded room?
- Do you sometimes feel that people are mumbling or not speaking clearly?
- Do you experience difficulty following dialogue in the theatre?
- Do you sometimes find it difficult to understand a speaker at a public meeting?
- Do you find yourself asking people to speak up or repeat themselves?
- Do you find men’s voices easier to understand than women’s?
- Do you experience difficulty understanding soft whispered speech?
- Do you sometimes have difficulty under-standing speech on the telephone or TV?
- Does a hearing problem cause you to visit friends or relatives less often?
- Do friends and family complain that you have the television too loud ?
Answering yes to one or two questions doesn’t mean you have hearing loss – answering yes to more than two could indicate that you have some hearing loss. Answering yes to five or more is likely to indicate that a hearing loss is present and you should seek to have your hearing assessed.
