Simply spend one minute reading this article
and you'll be on the road to helping your loved one or
friend to recover their hearing.
Before proceeding can you identify any of the following symptoms
in your friend or loved one ?
Click Yes or No
These simple four questions are related to a typical hearing self check.
Answering yes to one doesn't mean there's a problem - answering
yes to more than one could indicate that some hearing loss has occurred.
"How can you best help your friend or loved one
to regain their hearing ?"
The options available with hearing aids
By Colin Forrest, Director of THAAC
Hearing loss is a gradual process that develops over a period of
25 to 30 years. By the time people reach the age of 50 to 60 there
can be enough deterioration to interfere with conversation. A hearing aid
can help regain most of the hearing and allow people to
regain their self-confidence and social life.
"My hearing aid is very unobtrusive and
no-one has ever noticed I'm wearing it."
Mrs Murray
Causes and Symptoms of Hearing Loss
It
is typical for people with a mild to moderate hearing loss to be unaware
of their problem, even though it is obvious to their family and friends.
Most hearing professionals believe that hearing loss in older adults is
the accumulation of two or more causes, such as:
- Exposure to loud noises
- Family history
The typical thought process for someone who's steadily
losing their hearing is:
- I hear fine, it's just that people mumble; they don't
speak clearly any more.
- It's the noisy places where I have trouble hearing...
I'll just avoid those places and I'll be OK.
- My hearing will heal in time.
- I hear what i need to hear. I'll just ask them to repeat.
- I can cope with it. I'll just concentrate a little harder.
- It's not really bad enough that I need hearing aids
yet.
- Wearing hearing aids does not fit into my self image.
- If my hearing gets any worse, then I'll get help.
Most of the hearing loss can be improved effectively by
individually selected, prescribed and fitted hearing aids.
Regaining your hearing
A
hearing care professional is trained in the identification of hearing
loss. They are also knowledgeable in the selection, fitting, and
proper use of hearing aids, as well as the servicing of these small instruments.
Throughout the UK hearing care professionals are licensed, registered,
and/or hold permits to dispense hearing instruments. The hearing care professional
can help determine if your loved one has a hearing loss,
and if so, by how much. They will also explain the options available for
improving your friends hearing.
"A very caring and very good service!
The second hearing aid has made a massive difference."
